Firwood Fold - The birthplace of Samuel Crompton, inventor of the Spinning Mule, which revolutionised the cotton industry. Home of Bolton's only cruck cottages and thatched rooftops. Firwood Fold is perhaps better known for being the birthplace of Samuel Crompton, but it is also the location of several fascinating and historically valuable buildings which are mainly seventeenth century farm workers cottages. Samuel Crompton’s birthplace, number 10 Firwood Fold, is the only remaining with a thatched roof in Bolton.
